How Do You Get to the Gili Islands From Bali?

If you ever get a chance to get down to Bali, make sure you plan at least a 2 day trip out to the Gili Islands. You can take a quick fast boat from Padang Bai pier that arrives in about 90 minutes (details below).

The Gili Islands, or “Gilis” is a trio of islands about 50 miles East of the Bali coast, along the island of Palau Lombok.

The Gili Islands are a trio of small islands east of Bali and West of Palau Lombok

If you follow any travel bloggers on Instagram you’ll be sure to see a few of the famous beach swings on Gili Air.

Where are the Gili Islands?

The 3 islands are comprised of (going from West to East) Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air. Gilly Trawangan (aka “Gilly T” by the locals) is the largest of the 3 islands and the most developed. If you want to experience some night life was experiencing the daytime beach scene check out Gilly T.

Gili Meno, the middle island, is the most quiet, and has a beautiful Eastward facing beach with deep, blue water. This island has a few resorts, including Avia Villa Resort (where I stayed) and you may also wish to check out Mallias Bungalows, which is a short 5 min walk from the pier.

Gili Air was the island I headed to first, and probably has some of the best views.

The southern part of the island is where the most of the resorts are, and is easily recognizable by the shallow waters and what I like to call “Instagram photo haven.”

You’ve probably seen many photos from the picturesque swings and hammocks that overlook the sunset and the crystal clear, shallow waters.

Activities to do on the Gili Islands

Since I had about 3 days to explore around, and I was by myself, I spent the majority of the time getting footage on Meno and Air. However, there is actually quite a few things to do on the island.

Many people will head out the Gilis to get some SCUBA diving in. There are a few certification schools and dive centres that have regular guided dives throughout the various reefs.

If you’re traveling with a partner there are beautiful hikes and romantic dinner spots. And even if you have your children with you, there are plenty of places to explore within the island villages, and many resorts have pools if you want to stay in the confines of resorts.

Plus, each island has plenty of bikes to rent for about $3-5 USD. But check with your resort first or bungalow owner as they may have free bikes to use!
